Children’s Summer Camp Association -76 (registered association)
Children’s Summer Camp Association -76, better known as Kuru Summer Camp, has carried out preventive child welfare work for nearly 50 years. We organize summer camp activities for children and young people aged 6–17 at a camp center located on the shores of Lake Näsijärvi in Länsi-Teisko, Ylöjärvi, about 45 km north of Tampere. Each year, approximately 300 children and young people attend our camps.
The association is politically and religiously non-affiliated. Its background organizations include the City of Ylöjärvi, the Family Federation of Finland (Väestöliitto), Finnish Youth Societies (Suomen Nuorisoseurat ry), and Otavamedia Oy. Founded on the initiative of Seura magazine, Children’s Summer Camp Association -76 receives operational funding from the Funding Centre for Social Welfare and Health Organisations (STEA).
STEA funding enables summer activities during school holidays and provides camp experiences for children and young people who would not otherwise have access to them without supported camp activities. Priority is given to children and young people aged 6–17 who have specific social, financial, or health-related reasons connected to the child attending camp or the child’s family. These may include, for example, bullying, learning difficulties, loneliness, unemployment, low income, long-term illnesses, developmental disorders, family coping challenges, or special needs of family members. However, all campers must be able to take care of themselves and their basic needs without the assistance of a personal aide.
Supported holiday activities offer encouraging experiences, new friendships, and meaningful and safe summer activities for campers. The camps also support family well-being by, for example, helping guardians organize holiday time or providing time for rest and work during school holidays.
The association employs a part-time Executive Director and Assistant Executive Director year-round. Each year, we hire 20 employees for the summer camp season: four kitchen staff, two Assistant Camp Directors, two Nurse Instructors, and ten Camp Counselors. We offer versatile and meaningful summer employment where employees can use their strengths, take responsibility, and develop their skills. All employees receive training for their roles and for working within the camp organization.
